About the Artist
Nicole Conner is a contemporary artist based in Grafton, Wisconsin. She grew up on a small horse farm, where daily life meant learning to read animals — their stillness, their attention, the particular way they hold themselves in space. That early fluency with animal presence never left her, and it now sits at the center of her painting practice.
Nicole Conner studied Fine Art at UW–Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts and earned a BFA in Interior Architecture with an emphasis in Fine Art from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. She spent over a decade working as an interior designer, where she developed a deep appreciation for structure, balance, and intentional decision-making. This foundation continues to shape her painting practice, informing her approach to composition and guiding each brushstroke with clarity and purpose.
In 2023, Conner paused her design career to raise her two children and return to her first love—painting. This transition reawakened her artistic voice and deepened her commitment to creating work rooted in connection, memory, and emotional presence.
Conner approaches animal portraiture as an exploration of psychological presence rather than narrative or sentiment. Her paintings focus on moments of stillness and mutual awareness, examining how animals occupy space and engage the viewer through gaze. By resisting overt storytelling, her work allows quiet gestures, subtle tension, and expressive contrast to carry emotional meaning.
Through layered color, texture, and movement, Conner’s portraits move beyond representation to reveal the inner life of each animal—the bond they share with their people and the unmistakable feeling of being seen.
Through her work, Nicole Conner invites viewers to slow down and look closer, honoring the animals who look back at us and leave an indelible mark on our lives.
